Bronx News Roundup, Jan. 7

Happy Monday everyone and welcome back to the Bronx News Roundup. These are the Bronx stories we’re following today.

Bad news for Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson. According to a confidential report by the mayor’s office, obtained by DNAinfo, the Bronx “fell behind in stats ranging from the number of gun-toting suspects jailed to the conviction rate for violent felons.” Distubingly, the Bronx DA’s office only jailed 31 percent of those arrested for gun crimes. Johnson’s office responded by saying some of the indicators are misleading because they only take into account those arrested and not those indicted. “A great deal of evaluation, including whether or not to indict, takes place post arrest,” Johnson said in a statement.

The Westchester Square Partnership, which caters to South Asian immigrants here in the Bronx, is one of two city groups that will receive extra funding and resources to help residents create business cooperatives, reports the Daily News.

A woman was hit by a truck and died earlier this morning in Mott Haven, DNAinfo reports.

Pete Magistro, founder of the real estate company Bronx Pro Group in Morris Park, talks about his work and the pluses and minuses of living in the Boogie Down. [NY Times]

Steve Smith, who owns the waterfront at Oak Point, talks about his plans for the area, including a wetlands project that was wiped out during Hurricane Sandy, the Times reports.

And finally, this awesomely sad front page story from the NY Post about welfare recipient apparently using their EBT cards at strip clubs and liqour stores in the Bronx and elsewhere.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
