Welcome to another edition of the Bronx News Roundup. These are the Bronx stories we’re following today.
After a record low number of murders in 2012, New York City experienced it’s first murder of 2013 early this afternoon in the Bronx at the Monroe Houses on Story Avenue. Police say a 59-year-old woman, identified as Elzina “Zina” Brown by the NY Post, was shot and killed during an argument between Brown’s daughter and her boyfriend. According to the Post, Brown was home on her lunch break from her job as a school crossing guard when the boyfriend fired shots that hit Brown’s daughter in the nose (she’s expected to survive) and then Brown, who took a bullet to her chest. One of Brown’s daughter’s uncles called Brown “a God-fearing woman who did not have an enemy in the world.”
In other less-than-cheery Bronx news, reported by the Post, a man in Mott Haven reportedly took his 4-year-old daughter hostage and then, after a two-hour standoff with police, agreed to come out and surrender. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital for a mental evaluation. The 4-year-old was unharmed.
In the Jewish Press, writer Marc Schulte, a native Bronxite, delves into a new book called “Jewish Jocks: An Unorthodox Hall of Fame,” and unearths some interesting findings and insights. He notes how Jews gravitated toward basketball in the 1940s and 1950s and that one of the games great, Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes, played his high school ball at DeWitt Clinton High School.

With Westchester Square Medical Center set to be absorbed by a larger hospital (probably Norwood-based Montefiore Medical Center), locals fear they may lose the personal care and jobs they’ve come to rely on, NY1 reports. Montefiore officials told NY1 that it will keep the hospital open and employ “qualified workers. ”
