Bronx News Roundup: Horace Mann Facing Lawsuit & More

The prestigious Horace Mann School in Riverdale is facing a lawsuit by a victim who claims he was molested 450 times over the course of four years by music teacher Johannes Somary.  The victim claims that Somary, who passed away in 2007, molested him from 1973 to 1977.  The plaintiff is seeking damages and a jury trial, as his suit accuses Horace Mann of a cover-up operation, the Daily News reports.

Cincer Baltazar, a Bronx resident who was shot and ultimately paralyzed during an attempted mugging in November 2011, celebrated his sixth birthday last Sunday. The young boy and his family currently live in a building in Tremont and Baltazar attends school at a Westchester children’s hospital.  Baltazar is also learning to use mechanical braces to help him power his legs with the use of a walker.  The boy’s alleged shooter, Mauricio Acosta, has been in jail since the 2011 shooting and is set to appear in court again on April 5, DNAinfo reports.

Police are asking for the public’s help to find 18-year-old Quentin Stroman who escaped from a Bronx detention center last Saturday.  Stroman is 6-foot-1 and was last seen wearing a multi-colored baseball hat and black clothes.  Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Crime Stoppers hotline or website, NY1 reports.

Students from MS 331 will get to attend a mass meditation led by guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on March 30 at Manhattan’s Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.  Shankar has been at the helm of a national nonviolence campaign that aims to create one billion acts of nonviolence.  Teaching children about mediation and practicing it in school is a major pillar of Shankar’s “nonvio” campaign, the Daily News reports.

A 23-year-old man was killed yesterday afternoon in car crash on Webster Avenue near Fordham when his Honda swerved into oncoming traffic and collided with a Nissan.  The passengers within the Honda were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, one in critical condition and the other stable. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were also taken to St. Barnabas in stable condition, DNAinfo reports.
