Bronx News Roundup, Friday, May 25

Good morning and happy Friday, dear readers. Welcome back to another edition of our Bronx News Roundup. Weather: Same old, same old — wet, warm, redundant. High in the mid-70s.

Bob Kappstatter, our favorite political gossip columnist, is back, now editing the Bronx Times, and once again cranking out cantankerous cracks about the Bronx scene. The top story focuses on the drop in traffic summonses in the wake of the Bronx ticket fixing scandal that rocked the NYPD last year. Some 270,000 less tickets are expected by given out by the time this fiscal year ends on June 30. There’s also some juice on how happy Bronx State Sen. Jeff Klein is that Democrats appear poised to bounce John Sampson from his Minority Leader position and some gossip from last Saturday’s Bronx Ball. Welcome back, Kappy.

The race for the 13th Congressional District, which now includes a chunk of the northwest Bronx, has come down to a war of endorsements between the incumbent Charlie Rangel and leading challenger Adriano Espaillat. The article points out that it’s debatable how much influence these endorsements will have on the race. (There are other candidates in the race, including Clyde Williams, the former political director of the Democratic National Committee, and Joyce Johnson, a community organizer and local district leader in Harlem. We spoke with Williams earlier this week. He’s frustrated by the fact that we, the news media, continues to make the narrative all about endorsements. More on Williams’ candidacy later today as well as some more focus on Issues!)

Immigrant Bronx car wash workers have filed a lawsuit against their employer, claiming they are paid below minimum wage, aren’t compensated for overtime and that their manager steals their tips.

Select Bus Service is coming to Webster Avenue. One of the options would be to include a median bus lane.

Bronx Councilman Jimmy Vacca, who heads the Council’s transportation committee, wants the MTA to grade its subway stations. Which station do you think should get the lowest grade?

The Post (who else?) has photos of a brawl that broke out in Hunts Point between cab drivers and a pedestrian. Lovely.

Enjoy the day and the weekend. We’ll be back Monday. Send links and tips to us at norwoodnews@norwoodnews.org.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.
