Bronx News Roundup for March 24-29

As the Norwood News finally gets some relief from this cold weather, albeit relatively small, we got you covered on some of the hot Bronx stories making the rounds.

First up is the late-breaking story on several staffers from Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo heading to court over allegations of fraud. As reported by the New York Daily News, much of the heat on Arroyo’s trio of staffers stem from allegedly writing phony names on campaign petitions during Arroyo’s re-election bid last year. The trio faces upwards to seven years in prison. Arroyo maintains she knew nothing about the scheme.

More political juice can be found from our journaliste expérimenté Bob Kappstatter at The Bronx Times Reporter, capping the highs and lows from Independent Democratic Conference President Sen. Jeff Klein.

News 12 the Bronx lowlights traffic troubles on Fordham Road, where yearlong construction has made it extremely tough to navigate.

In the South Bronx, The Hunts Point Express reports on the life and times of Sister Miriam Thomas, who died at the age of 80. The nun, regarded as an icon within Hunts Point for lifting the area from bleakness, passed away early this month.

In more lighthearted news, The Bronx Zoo has a new animal on display–dinosaurs! Well, not exactly. According to the New York Daily News, the prehistoric lizards, all life-like, will be part of a exhibition this spring. Some dinosaurs are known to bob their heads and roar.

And that’s it for this week’s Bronx News Roundup. Be sure to check back next week for plenty of updates.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.
