Bronx News Roundup for Dec. 22-28

Ding, ding, ding!  Another round of the Bronx News Roundup is here with some interesting stories from our the journeymen and women telling the Bronx tale:

A mega-building project is finally in the works for the neighborhood of Melrose, according to the Daily News.   It won’t be until 2015 when residents will see the opening of “La Central”, a 184,500-square-foot building complete with 985 apartment units earmarked exclusively for low-income residents.  Major real estate players are tied to the project, which is still subject to public review.

Speaking of housing, an $18 million class action lawsuit is being filed against a shady real estate firm dubbed “Bad Ass Inc.” for allegedly  building and selling lemon homes to unsuspecting Bronxites, according to The Bronx Times Reporter.   Sen. Jeff Klein is corralling more victims, encouraging them to join the suit.

The Bronx Times Reporter’s Bob “Kappy” Kappstatter recaps a year’s worth of political juice he’s squeezed out of local pols with his “Winners and Losers” column.

And finally an interesting piece from City Limits that explores why big media newspapers avoid covering and circulating within the borough.  The piece names names, focusing primarily on the free newspapers am New York and Metro, who avoid stocking their dailies in subways stations, unlike Manhattan stations that are overloaded with the freebies.

And there goes your Bronx News Roundup for this week.  Be sure to check out the Norwood News…you never know when something interesting will appear!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
