Bronx News Roundup: Fire, Fatalities, and Fordham

Investigators are looking into what caused the massive five-alarm fire this morning at 226th Street and White Plains Road in Wakefield. The fire started in a shed a little after 6 am, and quickly spread to nearby businesses and a mosque. The 2 and 5 trains were suspended as firefighters spent nearly four hours getting the fire under control. An eleven-year-old was hospitalized for minor injuries from smoke inhalation and ten firefighters are being treated for minor injuries. The community is now facing the aftermath of the destruction to the whole business block, NY1 reports.

Sherika Stewart and her boyfriend Leon Walters have admitted to beating Stewart’s three-year-old daughter with a belt before the child died. The two are currently being held on $20,000 bail and are facing charges of assault and reckless endangerment. Prosecutors are still determining whether or not the beating is what killed the child, Daily News reports.

The mother of Bronx teen Alphonza Bryant, who was senselessly shot by two thugs on April 22, has revealed that her son was murdered in nearly the exact same location where his father was killed fourteen years earlier. Police are calling the tragic shooting a case of mistaken identity. Mayor Bloomberg even expressed his condolences during a speech on Tuesday, The New York Times reports.

Crossing guards Guadalupe Saldivar and Tammy Morales are being credited with the recovery of Guillermo Flores, a missing Bronx resident. Flores, 64, suffers from Alzheimer’s and had recently been reported missing by his family. Guadalupe and Morales spotted the gentleman as he was crossing the street, News 12 reports.

Fordham University president Fr. Joseph McShane and Lehman College president Ricardo Fernandez will be in attendance, along with many undocumented students from around the borough, at a rally today to urge Senator Klein to “stop gambling with the DREAM Act.” While Klein has been supportive of the Act, he has stated that legislation should be postponed until the state casinos provide enough funding for tuition assistance, Daily News reports.

NY1 is acknowledging the efforts being made by the Fordham University sailing team to help clean and repair the Sailmaker Marina, which is still significantly damaged from Hurricane Sandy. Owners Paul Laddamadda and Maura Mandrano have expressed deep thanks to the team. The Fordham sailors have reciprocated these feelings of gratitude, thanking Laddamadda and Mandrano for all the support they have given over the years.
