Welcome back to the latest edition of the Bronx News Roundup. These are the stories we’re following on Thursday, Feb. 7.
Bronx elected officials met with members of the postal union Wednesday morning to discuss their discontent with the federal agency’s decision to sell the Bronx General Post Office on E. 149th Street and Grand Concourse. The post office has been a New York City Landmark since 1976 and includes 13 Depression-era murals by artist Ben Shahn and his wife. However, postal officials claim it is no longer cost effective to own the building. Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene and other political officials hope the community will be able to attend the next meeting regarding the issue that they see as an injustice to the Bronx at large, Bronx Times reports.
The Critter Cam at the New York City Botanical Gardens picked up footage last night of a beaver, milling about by a tree. Before 2007, when the beavers nicknamed José and Justin turned up in the Bronx River, New York’s state animal had not been spotted alive on the river in nearly 200 years. Ann Rafalko, the garden’s director of online content, made it clear that this was reason to be excited, The New York Times reports.
The New York City Justice Corps, a Bronx-based program which provides education opportunities and job placement for young adults exiting their prison terms, is graduating 12 of its members today. The program has successfully graduated close to 300 people since its inception in 2008, Daily News reports.
Yudelka Tapia, who is running for Joel Rivera’s council seat, is set to face the Bronx Supreme Court after losing her appeal last week with the Campaign Finance Board regarding unspent campaign funds from her 2009 city council race, Bronx Times reports.
Jealyn Bisono, 15, beat out two dozen other students at Fordham High School for the Arts for first place in the school’s round of the August Wilson Monologue Competition. The national competition seeks to educate African American students on the life and work of the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. She will advance to the city-wide competition next month, Daily News reports.
One good reason to check out Oxygen’s new reality modeling competition series, The Face, is to see The Bronx getting represented by a knockout who goes by the name of Devyn professionally. Devyn is a single mom who grew up near Yankee Stadium, and is on the team led by Karolina Kurkova. The 22-year-old has been modeling since she was 15, Daily News reports.
