Bronx News Roundup, Feb. 11

Welcome back to the latest Bronx News Roundup. These are the Bronx stories we’re following today, Monday, Feb. 11.

Gay teens in the Bronx are still hoping for a new community center that will grant them the same support services the Bronx Community Pride Center once did. The center closed last June when the executive director, Lisa Winters, was arrested for “embezzling $338,000 to pay for exotic vacations and a dog walker,” the Daily News reports.

Community advocates are pursuing another center that will give the same services to the gay and lesbian community in the Bronx, such as HIV testing, resources, and support and dance groups. The new center will be inclusive to all communities within the greater LGBT community and will even be renamed as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender and Questioning Community Services Center.

Last year the parent council in the Bronx’s District 7 made a decision to “un-zone” the district and now Bronx families within District 7 will now be able to apply to different schools. Those with hopes of sending their children to better elementary schools will find themselves with choices. Check out DNAinfo’s list of notable elementary schools in district 7.

Food Network’s Cupcake Wars winners Ruth and Ron Bzdewka are working on bringing their House of Cupcakes franchise to East Brunswick, Manhattan and the Bronx! The couple competed on the show in 2010 and have since planned on expanding their booming business. The Bzdewka’s told the Daily Princetonian that the Princeton bakery will remain a family-run business.

On Friday, the Huffington Post reported that several students and a teacher from the Bronx High School of Visual Arts took a field trip to a virtual shooting game called iCombat. The trip was on Tuesday during school hours and has been under scrutiny ever since. New York City Schools Dennis Walcott called the field trip a “mistake”.
