Bronx News Roundup, Dec. 17

Welcome back to the Bronx News Roundup. These are the Bronx stories we’re following this Monday, Dec. 17.

This isn’t specifically Bronx-related, but, in the wake of the unspeakable tragedy in Connecticut on Friday morning, Mayor Bloomberg is renewing his push for increased gun control (see video above). President Obama offered his condolences to the victims’ families in Newtown last night and also called for action to prevent similar future mass shootings, the NY Times reports.

The Bronx, meanwhile, is dealing with the aftermath of a smaller-scale, but also disturbing, shooting at the entrance to Bronx Regional High School last Monday, the Daily News reports. The victim, who was shot in the arm, is expected to make a full recovery. The school, which sits on a campus with other schools that have many at-risk students, does not have metal detectors.

Five rare Chinese yellow-headed box turtles have recently hatched at the Bronx Zoo, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the Daily News, the Best Italian Sausage in New York is in the Bronx: Teitel Brothers on (where else?) Arthur Avenue.

Earnestine Russell, the award-winning leader of the nonprofit Baychester Youth Council, is in hot water over some unwarranted personal expenses, the WSJ reports.

A fire gutted two South Bronx buildings yesterday, CBS-NY reports.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
