Bronx police officer Pedro Serrano is the NYPD’s worst nightmare. Serrano, a veteran cop in the busy 40th Precinct, testified in federal court yesterday that his superiors directed him to target young black and Latino males for stop, question and frisk and admonished him for not doing it often enough, reports the NY Times. Last month, Serrano secretly recorded a conversation with his commanding officer, shedding light on how police officials push street officers to be aggressive with stop and frisk tactics. But the commander, Christopher McCormack, never actually mentions the race of potential targets, only telling Serrano to go after “the right people.” The lawsuit claims that New York City’s stop and frisk focus violates the constitutional rights of blacks and Latinos.
The Riverdale Press reports on the two new schools moving into DeWitt Clinton High School next year: Bronx Collaborative High School and World View High School. Both will enroll 108 freshman next year as Clinton shrinks.
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced that eight Bronx auto shop employees were being charged with doing fake auto inspections, the Daily News reports.
Bronx Times’ editor Bob Kappstatter takes a look at the crowded 15th District Council race after the latest financial disclosure filings.
Meanwhile, the Riverdale Press looks at the 11th District Council race, where Andrew Cohen’s sizable fundraising advantage continued to grow in the past two months. The other candidates in the race, Cliff Stanton and Cheryl Keeling, however, remained resolute.
Bad news for former Bronx Boro Prez Adolfo Carrion who is trying to run for mayor on the GOP ticket: The Bronx County Republican Party endorsed one of Carrion’s chief rivals, former MTA head Joe Lhota. Bronx GOP Party Chairman Jay Savino had indicated earlier that he would back Carrion, Politicker reports.
The Department of Transportation says its doing better at responding to pothole complaints. The agency, which has a Tumblr blog (The Daily Pothole) where motorists can lodge and track pothole complaints, says its response time is now less than two days from complaint to repair, reports the Daily News.
