Bronx News Roundup: 9-Year-Old Who was Shot is Recovering

By Hugh Thornhill

Here’s your news roundup for the day:

– Amanda Chauana, the 9-year-old who was shot just a week before, was released from the hospital earlier this week and has had a smooth recovery, the Riverdale Press reports. After being released from the hospital, she went to watch her brother play T-ball for the Kingsbridge Little League on Sunday with friends and neighbors showering her with praise and affection.

– Bronx community groups have been calling for Councilman Joel Rivera to back a pair of bills aimed at cracking down on discriminatory profiling and establishing NYPD oversight, the Daily News reports. Many local activists have been angered at the fact that the councilman has not been weighing in on the issues, especially since the area which he represents is mostly made up of populations that are often targeted by the NYPD Stop-and-Frisk policy.

According to a Bronx Times article, nearly 40 Bronx-based restauranteurs have joined together to file a lawsuit against the city’s Department of Health because they believe that the letter grading system imposed on them is unfair. Many of these restaurants have had to dish out thousands of dollars in fines for infractions, some of which are unrelated to food handling. The court date is set at July 11th.

That’s your news roundup for the day, we’ll be back on Monday.
