Lots of fun stuff happening around this great borough, and the Bronx News Roundup is here to highlight them all.
Of course, for the sake of unity, all Bronx papers covered the guilty verdict for disgraced FORMER Assemblyman Eric Stevenson for accepting bribes in exchange for writing legislation that would have benefitted developers of a two senior centers in the Bronx. Stevenson’s conviction could net him nearly 55 years in prison. Another sad tale to a once promising career. It’s unclear whether a special election will take place for his 79th Assembly District seat. Bob Kappstatter at The Bronx Times Reporter suspects reports a date is yet to be determined.
And finally the level of acrimony is growing over proposed construction of a 30,000-seat soccer arena by the New York City Football Club, according to The Bronx Times Reporter and DNA Info. Organizers held a community meeting where community skeptics charged the city should not foot some of the tab in building the stadium, which would abut Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers happen to hold a major stake in NYCFC.
In Bronx Park East, a local community group is helping to eliminate the so-called “mine field” of dog mess, as reported by the Daily News. It’s a problem all over the Bronx, yet seemingly un-enforceable since the Department of Sanitation is required to observe the crime before slapping tickets.
Residents in Kingsbridge are saying goodbye to a neighborhood staple–Loehmann’s on Broadway. The Riverdale Press reports the department store, part of a chain, is closing all of its stores. Owners are also laying off 88 employees between office employees at the borough’s corporate office and the store. So long Loehmann’s!
Employees at St. Catharine’s Academy in Pelham Parkway are threatening to strike for higher wages, according to News 12 The Bronx. Both sides are midway through negotiations as employees continue to picket every day before school begins.
