Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Thursday, July 25, that a Bronx man was sentenced 20 years to life in prison for first-degree manslaughter for fatally stabbing an acquaintance.
In the context of the announcement, Clark said, “The defendant viciously stabbed a 23-year-old man. He has been held accountable and will spend many years in prison.” The district attorney said the defendant, Johnnie Vickers, 42, of Cruger Avenue, The Bronx was sentenced on Thursday by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey M. Zimmerman to 20 years to life in prison, having been found guilty by a jury on April 19, of first-degree manslaughter.
According to the facts presented at trial, on February 18, 2021, Adam Saunders, 23, went to Vickers’ apartment and Vickers stabbed Saunders in the back multiple times. Vickers then left the body in the apartment until it was found four days later by police after neighbors called about an odor. Vickers was arrested on March 3, 2021.
The case was prosecuted by Karl Miller, homicide counsel and Assistant District Attorney Thomas Arning of Trial Bureau 30 under the supervision of Christine Scaccia, chief of the Homicide Bureau, Julie Deleon, chief of Trial Bureau 30, and Jessica Goodwin, deputy chief, Trial Bureau 30, and under the overall supervision of James Brennan, deputy chief of the Trial Division, and Theresa Gottlieb, chief of the Trial Division.
Clark thanked the Homicide Bureau professional staff, Joao D’Allessandro, supervisor of the Bronx DA Video Unit, and Video Technician Joseph Martinez for their assistance with the case. She also thanked NYPD Detective Sasha Brugal of the Bronx Homicide Squad and NYPD Detective Robin Martinez of the 49th Precinct for their work on the case.
