Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced on Thursday, April 14, that a Bronx man was sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the second degree for stabbing his fiancé multiple times, leading to the death of their unborn child.
According to the investigation, the incident took place on May 21, 2018, at around 11:30 p.m., inside 1027 Walton Avenue, located northeast of Yankee Stadium, an apartment that the defendant, Oscar Alvarez, 34, shared with his fiancé, Livia Abreu.
Alvarez stabbed Abreu six times in the torso and chest and she was held hostage for approximately 30 minutes after the attack. In an attempt to save both herself and her baby’s life, Abreu closed her eyes and pretended to be dead. Alvarez left, and Abreu was able to crawl to her neighbor’s apartment to call for help. Their unborn child died, and Abreu was hospitalized with injuries for about two weeks.
In the context of the sentencing, Clark said, “The defendant viciously attacked a woman who was 26 weeks pregnant, while she pleaded for her life and that of her unborn baby. He kept her from medical attention for a half hour.” She added, “This mother courageously tricked the defendant by pretending to be dead and then seeking help. The defendant faces many years in prison for the butchering of this young woman, which lead to the death of her unborn child.”
Clark said Alvarez was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and five years post-release supervision by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Marsha Michael. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second-degree on March 15, 2022.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Heather McMahon of the Domestic Violence Bureau, under the supervision of Agata DiGiovanni, chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau, and under the overall supervision of Adrienne Giunta, deputy chief of the special victims division, and Joseph Muroff, chief of the Special Victims Division.
Clark thanked NYPD Detective Michael Diskin, as well as NYPD Police Officers Jeuri Paulino, Louis Dilonardo and James Talbert of the 44th precinct for their assistance in the investigation.
