The Bronx Independent Cinema Center (BICC) is looking to bring an independent cinema space to Fordham Road, and the group is hoping that with the help of Bronxites, they can make it happen.
BICC is hosting a networking event on March 7 at 6 p.m. at The Dug Out bar, 880 River Avenue in the Concourse section of The Bronx. The evening will be moderated by filmmaker and BICC executive director and president, Gregory Hernandez. Pitch your ideas, and enjoy the evening networking with fellow filmmakers and movie lovers. Norwood News has reported over the years on Hernandez’s powerful documentary “1.5 Million,” about the literacy crisis in The Bronx.
“The Bronx is a borough with a rich and vibrant culture, but it doesn’t have a dedicated independent cinema center,” BICC members said. “That’s where we come in – and we need your help. We’re raising funds to create a space where Bronx filmmakers can indulge in film, work on their craft, and share their stories.”
BICC members held their inaugural gala on Nov. 16 last year in the South Bronx. They say they envision a cinema center as a creative and collaborative hub complete with a multi-screen theater, workshop rooms, and a studio. “In this space, we’ll offer workshops, mentorship programs, and other resources to help filmmakers develop their skills and bring their projects to life.’
The launch evening will begin with mingling and refreshments, followed by opening remarks, and there will be an opportunity to learn more about The Bronx film scene, network with other filmmakers, and get involved in the community. BICC members say it’s also a chance to support the Bronx Independent Cinema Center, a non-profit organization.
They say there are many ways to get involved from volunteering to joining BICC at their events, to making a tax deductible donation in order to reach their goal of $250,000 to bring a cinema center to Fordham Road.
As reported, Bronx Film 48, the initiative behind the annual, 48-hour, short filmmaking challenge, has since disbanded but some of its members are part of Bronx Independent Cinema Center. “Everyone has a story to tell, and we want to make sure Bronx filmmakers have the resources they need to share theirs,” BICC members said. “By donating to our campaign, you are playing a key role in creating a space where filmmakers can thrive and where The Bronx can continue to be a center of creativity and culture. Let’s raise $250,000 by the end of 2024 together!”
They added, “That is our first year goal. However, we’ll need to raise $1 million to ensure this Cinema Center remains open, operational, accessible and equitable for us!”
“Any amount helps get us closer to bringing Independent Cinema back to The Bronx,” the group said. Click here to donate. Watch the group’s fundraising video here.
