The Bronx Democratic machine is set to stump for two candidates in separate races the west Bronx.
Latoya Joyner, a candidate for the 77th Assembly District, and Marsha Michael, a candidate for the 79th Assembly District, have already received support from the Bronx Democratic caucus. Their official support kicks off tomorrow with supports rallying behind them at Bronx Borough Hall. The candidates, both female, represent a minority demographic within the Bronx political sphere, where male legislators dominate.
The 77th and 79th Assembly Districts have remained unrepresented for several months. Councilwoman Vanessa Gibson was the 77th’s seat holder until leaving to join the City Council. Disgraced former Assemblyman Eric Stevenson was forced to give up his 79th Assembly seat after being convicted of corruption.
Both areas are largely working poor with some minority residents living below poverty, according to U.S. Census data.
Female Assembly persons are few and far between in the Bronx. Currently, Assemblywoman Carmen Arroyo is the only female legislator among the eight all male Bronx Assembly caucus.
Joyner and Michael are both attorneys. Joyner is well-known within the borders of Community Board 4, having served as a board member. In a statement, Joyner intends to focus on the dire needs of the 77th Assembly District, mainly issues of housing, education, quality jobs and assisting seniors.
Michael, a product of the neighborhoods of the 79th District representing Tremont, Claremont Village and Morrisania, looks to preserve tenant rights, finding work for the working class and secure passage of the DREAM Act. The measure was voted down this session.
Petitioning for state seats begins May 29.
