The Bronx District Attorney’s Office and the NYPD are appealing to the public for help identifying an infant’s remains found in a water plant in the Hunts Point neighborhood two years ago.

They said that workers at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) water plant on Ryawa Avenue in Hunts Point discovered two severed legs on Aug. 31, 2022, and that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) determined that the legs belonged to a baby girl with an estimated gestational age of 38 weeks.

They said the cause and manner of death remain undetermined. They said the water plant receives sewage from 10 different zip codes within The Bronx and that the rest of the baby’s body has not yet been found.

They said the OCME uploaded the infant’s DNA into the National Database where it will be compared to missing persons’ cases, but that this will not help if the baby has not been reported missing. They said federally funded databases cannot accept her DNA profile because her death has not been ruled a homicide. They said without the rest of her body, the cause and manner of death cannot be determined.

Anyone with information about this matter is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS, the 41st Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 542- 5313 or Bronx Homicide Squad at (718) 378- 8791.
