Bronx District Attorney, Darcel D. Clark, announced on Monday, Oct. 19, the appointment of 61 new assistant district attorneys (ADAs) to her office.

“This diverse group of assistant district attorneys will undergo intensive training to help them serve the Bronx community in keeping with my ‘Safer Bronx Through Fair Justice’ policy, which dovetails with the criminal justice reforms,” Clark said. “These new Assistant DAs, along with our experienced, dedicated staff, will provide fairness to defendants while ensuring public safety.”

Out of the 61 new assistant DAs, 31 are people of color. The class is made up of 32 women and 29 men, all of whom come from law schools throughout the country. They have begun three months of training consisting of lectures on criminal court practice and professional responsibility, as well as observing court proceedings, workshop participation and more. Due to the pandemic, training will be held virtually.

In response to a question from Norwood News, on how this number of new hires compares to other years, a representative from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office said the office hired 64 new recruits in 2016, 122 in 2017, 62 in 2018 and 63 last year. She added that since January 2020, the office lost 68 ADAs through attrition (retirement, resignations).

The number of pending cases has been requested.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
