Bronx Crime Watch: Police Stop Crazy Man From Committing Suicide in Norwood

Last night, police officers say they prevented a mentally disturbed man from committing suicide in the Norwood area of the Bronx.

At around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to an emergency call saying an assault was taking place at 3070 Decatur Ave. When they arrived, a 31-year-old Hispanic woman opened the apartment door and said her 40-year-old boyfriend, also described as being Hispanic, “was acting erratic” and that he had holed himself up in the bathroom.

When the cops started investigating further, the boyfriend bolted from the bathroom, bleeding from cuts to his neck. Police say he exited the apartment and ran straight toward the second-floor stairway window. After bashing through the window with his head, the boyfriend tried to jump from the opening, saying “just let me die,” according to police.

The officers on the scene, however, grabbed onto the man’s ankles and stopped him from making the leap. With help from other officers who arrived on the scene, they were able to pull the man to safety.

An emergency medical team transported the man to St. Barnabas where he is listed in critical but stable condition. Police said the officers involved were treated for minor injuries, including lacerations to their hands, at Montefiore Medical Center.

These are the incidents when we really need to appreciate our police officers.

A bloody, fast-moving scene could be dangerous and frightening to anybody present. It is a testament to their training and commitment that they were able to rescue this guy.
