A pair of recent shootings in the southern Bedford Park area, just blocks from each other, left two young men with wounds in their extremities and the police looking for suspects.
On Tuesday morning, a 20-year-old male was shot in the right leg at 5:08 a.m. at 2885 Valentine Ave. A police spokesperson couldn’t say whether the shooting happened inside or outside of the building, which lies between East 199th and East 198the streets.
He is currently recovering at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police are looking for a suspect described as a black male, wearing a white t-shirt, and carrying a black bag.
The incident came in the wake of another shooting that took place on Friday, July 5 at 11 p.m. The incident occurred on Bainbridge Avenue and East 198th Street, where a 26-year-old male was found wounded after being shot in the hand. He too is at St. Barnabas Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Police are still looking for a suspect.
The area where the shootings occurred was on the cusp of Sectors G and H in the 52nd Precinct. The area has been known for its high crime rate, mostly related to drugs and gang violence.
Over the past several years, Sector G has the highest crime rate of the 15 sectors within the precinct.
Recently, the rate of violence has increased in the precinct. The latest crime statistics published by the NYPD, which lists crimes through June 30 (see chart below), shows a 5 percent rise in felony assaults this year, compared to the same period of time last year. In the last week of June, there were was a murder and 13 felony assaults, which can include shootings.

— Police are looking for two suspects who violently robbed a woman on June 29 in an apartment lobby on Briggs Ave. in 52nd Precinct. Carolyn Farmer, 62, was knocked to the ground and had her cash stolen by an unknown assailant who then fled the scene, CBS News reports. A police spokesperson told us the suspects followed the victim to her apartment before the assault and robbery. See video of the suspects below.
— On July 8, a 29-year-old man was shot at a BP gas in Williamsbridge, News 12 in The Bronx reports. The victim was shot once in the shoulder and is currently recovering at the Montefire Medical Center.
