A Bronx man from the Concourse section of the borough was sentenced to 9 years in prison on Monday, Feb. 26, for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for keeping a gun in his apartment.
In the context of the announcement, Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said, “A Bronx jury has convicted the defendant of possession of a gun and now he will serve nine years in prison. We must end the proliferation of illegal firearms in our borough, and holding people accountable sends a message that you should think twice about having a gun.”
Clark said the defendant, Steven Wright, 42, of Walton Avenue, was sentenced on Monday to nine years in prison and five years post-release supervision by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Raymond Bruce. A jury convicted Wright on Jan. 3, of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon after a four-week trial. Clark’s office said Wright is a predicate felon, with three prior felony convictions. According to lawinsider.com, a predicate felony means any felony involving child abuse.
According to the investigation, on April 6, 2022, a search warrant was executed at Wright’s home, and during the search a .380-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol was found next to his bed, in the bedroom. In the hallway closet, a Smith & Wesson magazine was recovered containing five rounds of ammunition.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys George Pikus and Sonja Jamelo of Trial Bureau 60, under the supervision of Michael Schordine, deputy chief of Trial Bureau 60, Susanna Imbo, chief of Trial Bureau 60, and the overall supervision of James Brennan, deputy chief of the Trial Division, and Theresa Gottlieb, chief of the Trial Division.
Clark thanked Joao D’Alessandro, major case assistant district attorney of Trial Bureau 60, Gianluca Infantino, supervisor of the BXDA video unit and video technician, and NYPD Detective Kristopher Persaud of the Bronx District Attorney’s Squad for their assistance with the case. She also thanked NYPD Sergeant Paul Negersmith, Detective Nicole Spinelli, and Police Officer Scott Smith, all of the 44th Precinct; and Detective Danielle Carbone of the NYPD Police Laboratory, firearms analysis section; and Sergeant Max Chow of the emergency service unit for their work on the investigation.
