Bronx Borough President, Ruben Díaz Jr., announced on Wednesday, Jan. 13, his endorsement of Eric Dinowitz, male district leader of the 81st assembly district and son of Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, in his bid to win the 11th City Council District race for which a special election will be held on March 23.
“I have seen the great work Eric has done as Democratic district leader and chair of the aging committee on Community Board 8,” said the borough president. “He has a true record of accomplishments for the district. Whether that is changing lives through his work as a special education teacher, or fighting to bring a much-needed elevator to the Mosholu Parkway train stop, Eric has what it takes to improve the lives of everyday New Yorkers.”
Díaz added that he knows the district leader will make the Northwest Bronx a better place to live or retire. “I’m excited to strongly support him,” he said.
Reacting to the news, the district leader said, “BP Ruben Díaz Jr. is a phenomenal leader for our borough, and I am excited to have his support. Our borough has been hit hard by the coronavirus, and it will take all of us to ensure that our recovery centers our students, seniors, and working families.” He added, “As the Northwest Bronx’s next Council Member, I will fight to deliver the resources and support we need to overcome the pandemic and come back stronger.”
As reported by the Norwood News, the district leader has also been endorsed by Congressman Adriano Espaillat, the United Federation of Teachers and, amid some controversy, by the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club. He is a father, a public school special education teacher, and chair of Bronx Community Board 8’s aging committee.
Other candidates in the 11th District race include Carlton Berkley, Jessica Haller, Mino Lora, Abigail Martin, Dan Padernacht, Kevin Pazmino and Marcos Sierra. Martin and Sierra announced last week that they have dropped out of the March special election but still plan to participate in the June primary.
