Meat supplier, Boar’s Head announced a product recall of certain packaged meat products on Friday, July 25, in light of an ongoing investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) into a Listeria outbreak across the country impacting several states in the east of the country and amid the death of two people.

 

An update to the voluntary recall announcement dated July 30 by Boar’s Head reads as follows:

 

“To Our Valued Consumers:

At Boar’s Head Brand, we take food safety very seriously. On Friday, July 25, 2024, we initiated an immediate and voluntary recall of our Strassburger Brand Liverwurst because it had the potential to be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. At that time, we also made the decision to voluntarily recall nine additional products that were produced at our Jarratt, Virginia facility on the same production line and on the same day as the liverwurst product. This involved removing over 200,000 pounds of product from the market which was done quickly and effectively.

On Monday evening, July 29, 2024, we learned from the USDA that our Strassburger Brand Liverwurst has been linked to the national deli meat Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. Based on this new information, we took steps to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect public health.

Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to immediately and voluntarily expand our recall to include all items produced at the Jarratt facility. We have also decided to pause ready-to-eat operations at this facility until further notice. As a company that prioritizes safety and quality, we believe it is the right thing to do.

 

Consumers are advised to discard any recalled products listed below or return them to the store where purchased for a full refund.”

The Associated Press reported on July 30 that the problem was discovered when a liverwurst sample collected by health officials in Maryland tested positive for Listeria. Further testing showed that the type of bacteria was the same strain causing illnesses in people. AP also reported that according to Agriculture Department officials, the affected meat was distributed to stores nationwide, as well as to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama.

Meanwhile, the CDC reports that “Listeria is especially harmful to people who are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or with weakened immune systems. CDC always recommends people at higher risk for listeriosis avoid eating meats sliced at the deli or heat them to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot before eating.”

 

According to the agency as of Aug. 7, updated from July 19, 34 people have contracted Listeria as a result of the latest outbreak. Officials said this resulted in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths across 13 states. Twelve people in New York State contracted Listeria, the most of any affected state to date, CDC officials said, adding that the investigation into the outbreak remains active.
