New York City has opened its Section 8 housing waiting list for the first time since 2006. The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program is a federal program designed to provide rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to help them find decent, safe, and sanitary housing.
State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, who represents parts of The Bronx and Westchester counties, is encouraging Bronxites to avail of the opportunity to apply for Section 8 housing before the upcoming deadline. “The waitlist is open only until [Friday] May 28th, so please complete and submit your application at your earliest convenience,” Biaggi announced on Tuesday, May 18. She added that any residents with questions or concerns regarding the program could contact her office at biaggi@nysenate.gov or by calling 718-822-2049.
In New York State, the Section 8 housing program is administered by the Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) Office. Applicants must apply while the waitlist is open, and HCR will select 15,000 households through a lottery. Those selected for the waitlist will be offered a housing voucher as one becomes available.
Residents can find details on eligibility, how to apply, and answers to FAQs on HCR’s website at https://hcr.ny.gov/section8 or by calling the hotline at 833-990-4001. Click here for the online application.
Norwood News recently reported on the case of 63-year-old “Jerry,” who says he was illegally locked out of the apartment where he used to live in March. He said he used to live at Baychester Houses, a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complex (Section 8 housing) located at 1930 Schefflin Avenue in the Edenwald section of the Bronx.
The lock-out follows the death of Jerry’s room-mate earlier this year, and also appears to coincide with a recent “transition” of the NYCHA housing complex to a private company called Cross Bronx Preservation LLC under a government program called PACT [Permanent Affordability Commitment Together]. Jerry says he is taking legal action through Bronx Housing Court regarding the matter. According to his neighbors, he had lived at Baychester Houses for, at least, 11 years. He is now homeless.
Thx for this, it’s informative and helpful for community who seek better housing and reasonable living during this pandemic times and to go forth into the future and just to b able to live…
Glad you found it useful Wanda. Thanks for your feedback.
