One person died and three others were injured in a residential fire caused by a lithium-ion battery in Belmont on Thursday, Oct. 24, the FDNY said.
The department said they received a call for a report of smoke/fire at 2264 Beaumont Avenue, a 3-story multiple dwelling located between Grote Street and East 183rd Street at 11.49 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24.
They said the fire was on the third floor of the bulding and that 12 units, comprising 60 fire & EMS personnel responded to the scene.
They said four people were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital. One civilian was in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased. Another civilian had serious but non- life threatening injuries and two firefighters incurred minor injuries.
They said hazardous material (haz mat) required for the removal of a lithium-ion battery from the scene and the blaze was brought under control at 00.39 a.m. They said the fire was determined to be caused by the lithium-ion battery.
A representative from the Red Cross of Greater New York, Desiree Ramos Reiner, said that after the fire, the American Red Cross registered six households (including eight adults) for emergency assistance, including emergency temporary lodging and financial assistance.
There was one minor injury reported following a separate Belmont fire at 416 East 187th Street on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
As also reported, a 15-year-old girl was shot in Belmont on Monday evening at East 183rd Street and Crotona Avenue, and on Saturday night, Oct. 26, an 11-year-old boy was also shot in the leg in Belmont.
