Police said a 26-year-old man has been arrested following the fatal shooting in the Belmont section of The Bronx of 22-year-old Miguel Vargas from Fordham Heights in mid-February.
As reported, police said that on Monday, Feb. 13, at around 6.57 p.m., officers from the 48th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a man who had been shot inside 689 East 187th Street in Belmont.
An NYPD spokesperson said, “Upon arrival, officers observed a 22-year-old male with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. EMS responded and transported the aided male to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”
Police said their investigation found that prior to the shooting, two unidentified people arrived at the location on a motorized scooter. They said the passenger then fired several rounds, striking the victim multiple times, and then got back on the scooter.
Police said both suspects then fled southbound along Beaumont Avenue. They said at the time there were no initial arrests and the investigation remained ongoing. The deceased was later identified as 22-year-old Vargas of Tiebout Avenue in Fordham Heights.
On Monday, May 8, pursuant to what was described as an ongoing investigation, police said on Saturday, May 6, at 00.10 a.m., Yorvin Gomez, 26, of Davidson Avenue in the Morris Heights section of The Bronx was arrested in the context of the fatal shooting of Vargas. Gomez was charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon (a loaded gun).
As reported, Gomez was also, in recent days, charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon (a loaded firearm) in the case of the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Johnny Gaston in front of 1920 Osbourne Place in University Heights on Dec. 15, 2022. As also reported, a 19-year-old man, Gibran Guerrero, had also already been arrested and charged in the case of Gaston’s death.
A person arrested and charged with a crime is deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
