Residents of Bedford Park queried why a helicopter was seen hovering over the vicinity of Lehman College and the Jerome Park Reservoir on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

One resident said the helicopter had been seen hovering over the area for about 30 minutes at around 3.23 p.m. A member of the Norwood News team later visited the area but reported that all was quiet at that stage.

A video of the chopper was posted to the Citizen’s App at around 3 p.m. with a request for information from the public as to the reason for the aircraft in the area.

We followed up with the NYPD who said they could not share any information regarding the helicopter sighting “at this time.” We asked if they could confirm if it was a police aircraft and they said they could not.

We will share any updates we receive on the matter.

On the other hand, District 11 City Councilman Eric Dinowitz is calling on volunteers to participate in a HOPE NYC homeless outreach event at Lehman College tonight, Jan. 23, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. See attached flier for details. Registration in advance is required.

Last week, the councilman wrote, “Please join us next week for the annual HOPE Count. This is a crucial effort our city undertakes to best support our unsheltered neighbors by collecting data and offering services in person. Sign up at NYC.GOV/HOPE and select Lehman College as the meeting location.”

Amid the ongoing cold temperatures, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson held a coat giveaway at Bronx Borough Hall last week. “Thank you to our sponsors for joining us for our Winter Coat Distribution at Bronx Borough Hall,” Gibson said. “We were proud to distribute coats, scarves, hats, and other items to our residents and families. A special thank you also to the Hip Hop Gamer for his partnership.”

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
