A man has died following a road accident in Bedford Park, police said.
The incident occurred on Thursday, March 23, at around 9.43 p.m., according to the NYPD who said officers from the 52nd Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision that involved a pedestrian who had been struck at the intersection of East 198th Street and Grand Concourse.
An NYPD spokesperson said, “Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified adult male pedestrian, unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway with head trauma. EMS responded to the location and transported the aided male to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.”
According to the NYPD, upon initial investigation, the department’s Highway district collision investigation squad determined that the pedestrian had been attempting to cross Grand Concourse from east to west against a pedestrian signal at a marked crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2002 gray Ford Explorer.
They said at the time of the collision, the vehicle was being driven by a 47-year-old man who was traveling northbound on the right lane of Grand Concourse approaching East 198th Street with the green traffic signal in his favor.
According to police, the driver remained at the scene and was not injured. They said there are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing. They added that the deceased remains as yet unidentified.
The NYPD handles all criminal aspects of collision investigations, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
