A 74-year-old female pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a car in Bedford Park on Thursday, police said.
Police said the accident took place at 9.31 a.m. at Bainbridge Avenue and East Mosholu Parkway South.
Police said a 46-year-old man was driving a Honda CRV westbound on Bainbridge when it was struck by a 2006 Toyota Corolla traveling southbound on East Mosholu Parkway South.
“Subsequently, the Honda struck a 74-year-old pedestrian [who] was crossing at that intersection,” a police spokeswoman said, adding that the pedestrian sustained severe trauma to the body and was transported to St. Barnabas in critical condition.
“The operator of the Toyota Corolla, who was a 66-year-old female, remained on scene and was taken to St. Barnabas in stable [condition],” she added.
The spokeswoman said the 46-year-old male driver of the Honda CRV was taken into police custody for driving a stolen vehicle and charges are pending.
One local male resident we spoke to, later that day who was seated in a nearby play area for kids adjacent to the scene of the accident and beside P.S. 8, said there had been a police chase prior to the accident. When asked about this, a police spokesperson said the matter was under investigation.
Another female resident, Isamarie Lara, told Norwood News she was coming downstairs to go to the bank that morning when a police officer told her she needed to go in a different direction because the street area was closed off by her building [opposite the scene of the accident]. “I saw two cars, and they had a sign that said you cannot pass through,” she said.
“I saw a lot of officers around everywhere and a person was on the floor outside of the car, she said. “The person’s blood is coming out of [her] mouth,” she said, adding that police officers appeared to be placing the victim on her side to avoid her choking.
“It’s a lot of blood,” the woman said, adding that the female driver of one of the cars was dressed in blue scrubs like a nurse or a home healthcare worker might wear.
