No one could have predicted that a woman who was simply walking her dog in Claremont Park, away from speeding motorists on the streets surrounding the park, would be hit by an out-of-control driver, barreling down a footpath inside the park just before dawn on Saturday. Yet, that is exactly what happened, and police have since arrested an Atlanta man who has been charged with running over the woman.

According to the Collision Investigation Squad Report system maintained by the NYPD, the incident unfolded at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, after a 911 caller reported “a pedestrian struck inside of Claremont Park,” located in the 44th precinct.

After running over a woman inside Claremont Park, police said a driver of the vehicle later struck two parked cars also, while attempting to turn from Clay Avenue onto Claremont Avenue at Webster Avenue on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

According to the report, “upon arrival, officers observed a 58-year-old female pedestrian lying on the ground with severe trauma to her head and torso.” The victim was rushed by EMS to Lincoln Medical Center in critical condition with severe head trauma and other injuries.

A preliminary investigation found that 21-year-old man allegedly recklessly drove a 2017 silver Nissan Altima along a pedestrian roadway. The report found that the vehicle mounted a curb onto a grassy knoll, striking a tree. It read, “The vehicle continued on the grass striking the pedestrian and her dog. After dragging the pedestrian, the operator of the vehicle then backed up and left the location exiting at East 170[th] Street and Clay Avenue.”

After exiting the park, the 21-year-old then allegedly drove a short distance down Clay Avenue, where he allegedly slammed into two parked cars at Claremont Parkway and Webster Avenue. Police said the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot and was captured by patrol officers from the 44th precinct a short distance away.

Police later charged Becan Floyd, 21, of Atlanta, GA., with two counts of assault, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of stolen property, reckless driving and driving without a license.

Police say the driver of a Becan Floyd from Atlanta fled the scene on foot after allegedly running over a woman in Claremont Park and later striking two parked cars in the Claremont section of The Bronx on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

At the scene of the incident, investigators were observed inside Claremont Auto Parts, a business located across the street from the second collision. The business had at least one camera facing in the direction of the Silver Nissan when it allegedly plowed into the parked cars.

Officials could not immediately say if the injuries to the still-unidentified woman mowed-down in the park were intentional, accidental or if drugs, alcohol or weather played a role in the incident. The New York City metro area was experiencing what the NY Daily News described as a sleet and snow “bomb cyclone” at the time of the crash. Norwood News had reported that officials had said a wintry mix of rain and snow was expected throughout Saturday, with one inch of snow on paved surfaces, and up to three inches on unpaved surfaces anticipated.

Police investigate two related vehicle incidents in and around Claremont Park after one woman was seriously injured after being hit by a car inside the park as she walked her dog and two parked cars were later struck by the same moving vehicle in the vicinity of the park on Saturday, March 12, 2022.

Meanwhile, officers from the 49th precinct were seen at the site of another apparent collision in the Bronx on the same morning, at the intersection of White Plains Road and Pelham Parkway, where bystanders reported two separate crashes at the intersection.

When contacted for more information, the NYPD had no record of the crash.
