THE “NORWOOD,” “THE Bronx” mural located on East 207th Street and Bainbridge Avenue in Norwood, pictured Sunday, March 9, 2024, has been recently defaced with the word “Ammo.” The original mural was sponsored by former District 11 City Councilman Andrew Cohen, presented by Artbridge and painted by Laura Alvarez.

Bronx muralist and artist Laura Alvarez who, as reported, recently launched an online fundraiser to repaint the beloved “Norwood” mural, located on East 207th Street and Bainbridge Avenue in Norwood, after it was vandalized / tagged last year, is calling on the volunteers to join her in repainting the mural on Sunday, June 2, having carried out some preparatory work already on June 1.

“Come join us for a fun day of painting and creativity at the Norwood Mural!” Alvarez wrote in an email announcement on May 31. “We will be gathering at 211 E 207th St to add some fresh colors and designs to this beloved community artwork. No painting experience is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands (and clothes) dirty. Let’s make this mural shine again together!”

Alvarez signed off, saying, “See you there!” Alvarez said volunteers can also sign up for other dates here. Alvarez said the mural project is made possible with regrant funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Bronx Council on the Arts. Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
