Another Snowstorm Set To Pound The Bronx

It’s deja vu over, and over, and over again!  The Bronx is poised to get several inches of snow on top of the graying snow this Thursday as another system slowly lumbers up to the Boogie Down.  The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that’s in effect from 6pm Wednesday to Valentine’s Day, predicting 6 inches of snow in total.  The The City is heeding the warning and taking no chances once again, with the Department of Sanitation issuing another snow alert.  As for city schools, they still remain open for now, with no word yet from the Department of Education.

Bronxites are still taking it easy navigating some icy streets that were left unplowed and uncleared.  Many have resorted to walking alongside the roads, feeling they would fare better but putting themselves in harm’s way.  Here in Norwood, one of the major concerns was clearing some of the pathways along Williamsbridge Oval Park, which remains a heavily walkable area even under several inches of snow.  Complaints were made to the city’s 311 system, resulting in crews with the city Department of Transportation to clear up some of the walkways.

Several Facebook neighborhood group pages were outraged over the lack of response by city agencies who kept pointing fingers over who is ultimately responsible for clearing streets, walkways or passageways.

Snow has gotten so bad this year that Mayor Bill deBlasio has increased the budget of the Sanitation Department to offset costs incurred this winter and perhaps for the next winter season.

So stay with the Norwood News as we attempt to help you cope through this nasty weather!

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
