Residents preparing to celebrate Mother’s Day at the Allerton Avenue building where a 25-year-old resident was shot and killed hours earlier were in disbelief that the fatal shooting occurred outside their front door.

According to police, and as reported, Daniel Lachapel, 25, was shot once in the head shortly before midnight on Saturday, May 11, and died outside his Allerton Avenue home, near the corner of White Plains Road.

One patrol officer from the 49th Precinct was observed sitting in a police vehicle the following morning, as the investigation continued.

When asked about the incident, a female resident of the building told Norwood News, “I was in my bed, and I heard like 7 or 8 gunshots go off and people just started screaming and running everywhere.”

When informed of the victim’s age, the woman responded, “25? Oh my God! He was so young! That’s sad.” She added, “A black van drove off. Yeah, so I don’t know if it was from the shooting or if they were just trying to get out of the area.” Asked if she gave that information to the police, she replied, “No, I didn’t speak to them.”

A male resident of the building later told Norwood News, “Nothing like this has ever happened [at the building].” He added, “I left the house maybe an hour before it happened; it was a normal night to me.”

When asked if the video surveillance cameras outside the building were working, he responded, “That’s a good question. I’m not sure they should. If they do, it captured everything.”

When contacted by phone, the Super of the building confirmed that the cameras were working and police have a video of the incident.

Neither the super or the residents we spoke to at the large, 6-story building knew the victim or knew the apartment he lived in.

Police said they have made no arrests and to date, have not provided a description of the gunman. The NYPD continues to investigate.

Police said there are no arrests at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
