More than 100 students from the New York Institute for Special Education (NYISE) participated in a holiday concert for a near-capacity crowd filled with staff and family members on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023.
During the holiday concert held at NYISE, located at 999 Pelham Parkway North in the Allerton section of The Bronx, the young performers who ranged from kindergarten through 12th grade performed a variety of popular holiday songs and dances.
The concert featured a mix of solo and group performances from students who are part of the school’s Schermerhorn and Van Cleve programs, which serve children with visual impairments and emotional disabilities.
The performances included renditions of such Christmas favorites as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and a special “Joy to the World” number, which was performed by students playing English handbells.
NYISE was founded in 1831 and is one of the oldest schools in the nation providing specialized services for children with disabilities. The school has been based in the Bronx since 1924, and currently serves 250 students from the five boroughs, including 100 children from The Bronx.
