A 34-year-old male motorbike driver has died following a motor vehicle accident at Barker Avenue and Waring Avenue in Allerton, police said.
According to the NYPD, on Tuesday, April 16, at around 9.22 p.m., officers from the 49th Precinct came upon a vehicle collision at the intersection of Barker Avenue and Waring Avenue in Allerton. They said further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) determined that a 34-year-old man was driving a 2018 Yamaha motorcycle which was traveling northbound on Barker Avenue, when he went through a steady red light.
Police said the motorbike then hit the front, left corner of a 2023 Kia Sportage SUV driven by a 19-year-old woman who had been traveling westbound on Waring Avenue. They said the motorcycle then also struck a parked, unoccupied 2022 Honda Pilot SUV, causing the motorcycle driver to be thrown from his motorbike.
Police said EMS responded and transported the motorcycle driver to NYC Health and Hospitals/ Jacobi where he was pronounced deceased. They said the female driver of the KIA Sportage remained at the scene, no arrests have yet been made and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad (CIS).
They said the identity of the deceased is being withheld pending proper family notification.
We asked the NYPD if police had been in pursuit of the motorcycle before the accident occurred. We did not receive an immediate response.
With CIS investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
