After being closed for six months due to a fire, Nicky’s Coffee Shop, a beloved diner on Bainbridge Avenue in Norwood, reopened last week with a sleek new look, expanded hours and a saintly presence.
“Feels very good,” said Nicky Manias, who opened the shop over 28 years ago. “This is my second house. All my family works here — two kids and my wife. This is a family restaurant. Same customers every day.”
Nicky’s son George, 28, who was living in Greece at the time of the blaze, said the fire devastated his family.
“My mother was crying for like a week, my father was trying to be strong,” said George, who left his job overseas to help get Nicky’s back up and running.
A month after the fire, repairs were halted due to a problem with the new exhaust system. The family, which is Greek Orthodox, turned to St. George for help.
“We made a promise, if everything goes good, we’re going to put St. George in our store,” George said. “We begged St. George to help us. We said, ‘we’re going to put you in the store!”
A solution for the exhaust system was found and now the diner includes a painting honoring St. George. A local priest also blessed the shop before it reopened.
Nicky says he financed the renovations mostly out of his own pocket. “Insurance, very few, very small!”
George said people wondered about the need for an upgrade. “Is it worth it? For this neighborhood? Look at the places all around you, why are you doing all of this? Fancy lights, painting and wood,” said George, offering a simple explanation.” We’re Greek and we like to see nice things.”
Along with the new look, Nicky’s has new hours. Instead of 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nicky’s will now stay open until 9 p.m.
“I want to see how it goes,” Nicky says.
