A Year in Review, a Decade in Review: The Latest Edition of the Norwood News is Out!

Dear Fellow Readers,

The year’s first edition of the Norwood News for the new decade is out with plenty of community stories to read and share. We have packed 28 pages full of news from this corner of the Bronx, so let’s start with page one!

Our top story takes a look back at 2019 with our annual Year in Review. We pored over some of the top stories that kept our attention for 2019, including some stories that barely made any news. And with 2019 closing out the decade, we decided to take a look at some impactful stories from 2010 and beyond with our Decade in Review feature. There’s only so much page space we can devote, but we hope to have captured some major stories for the borough.

Inside the cover you’ll read a piece by José A. Giralt on efforts by community stakeholder to organize a petition drive against the MTA’s proposed bus route revamp in the northwest Bronx. The proposed cuts for the Bx34 bus seems to serve as the inspiration behind this effort. Read why.

We then shift to Norwood, and a story of the Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center and its need for funds to replace their troublesome roof. Read up on the costs associated to this massive project and what the group has raised so far.

The Norwood News also brings you the regular staples–Inquiring Photographer, Neighborhood Notes, and Out & About. We hope these features make you the smartest person in the Bronx.

So check out the latest edition of the Norwood News. Comments are always welcome. Send them to our editor, David Cruz, at dcruz@norwoodnews.org or tweet directly to him at @CWEBCRUZER. We’re always eager to read them, and sometimes publish them!

Norwood News Team

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students. As you navigate this website, please let us know if you discover any glitches or if you have any suggestions. We’d love to hear from you.
