A Food Drive For the Nation’s Veterans, Courtesy of Bronx Councilmen

by David Cruz

Veterans in need of a helping hand could find one in the Bronx thanks to two local city councilmen.

Councilmen Andrew Cohen and  Fernando Cabrera are answering the call of duty by taking part in the New York City Council’s Veterans Food Drive, which runs until Thursday, Nov. 20. The drive comes as the country pauses to thank a veteran this Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Non-perishable foods will be collected throughout the city, which will go to pantries that specifically serve military veterans and their families. A report by the Food Bank for NYC estimates 30 percent of military vets rely on pantries to get by.

Some suggested donations include canned meals (stew, chili, soup), tuna and canned meat, peanut butter, pasta, canned foods with pop-top lids, peanut butter, low-sugar cereals, oatmeal, 100% fruit juices in single serving boxes, canned fruit packed in juice and canned vegetables.

“As a community, we should use this holiday season to demonstrate how thankful we are for their service by helping the Food Bank for NYC remain well stocked,” said Councilman Cohen.

Cabrera later joined the cause, saying the Bronx has a “responsibility to take care of the men and women who bravely fought for our country.”

“The least we can do for our heroes, who sacrificed a lot and paid a high price for the freedom we all enjoy today, is to make sure their needs are met,” he said.

Foods can be dropped office at Cohen’s district office at 277 West 231st St. Cabrera’s office is located at 107 E. Burnside Ave.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
