31-Count Indictment Against Bronx Man in Wild Police Shootout

The man allegedly involved in a wild shootout with plainclothes cops from the 52nd Precinct faces a 31-count indictment. The shooting left two people hurt by several stray shots that came from one of the officer’s gun.

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office has charged Edwin Castillo-Concepcion of Longwood with first- and second-degree attempted murder, and other related charges in the shootout at University Heights on Dec. 5.

Castillo-Concepcion also faces robbery charges in a crime that happened moments before the shooting touched off.

Authorities said Castillo-Concepcion robbed two men at gunpoint inside 98 W. 183rd St., stealing a backpack before firing off a shot with a .25-caliber pistol. He quickly encountered Police Officers  Juan Gomez and his partner, where he shot at the officers, according to the indictment. Gomez returned fire, shooting 27 times.

Two people were accidentally shot by Gomez–a 12-year-old girl struck by bullet fragments in her right leg and another victim, Irene Urena Perez, who was hit in the stomach. Both victims were taken to local hospitals.

Concepcion was also wounded, shot in the neck and the foot and was taken into custody outside the Mi Sueña Sports Bar at 152 W. Fordham Rd. He was found with two kilograms of cocaine in his backpack.

Perez later filed a lawsuit against the NYPD for causing injuries to her body.

Castillo-Concepcion is currently being held at Rikers Island. He’s due back in court on Jan. 31.
