A 20 year-old man was fatally shot in the chest on the sidewalk in Kingsbridge, with detectives now hunting for his gun-toting killer.

Police from the 52nd Precinct were called to the side entrance of 65 East 192nd St., which is directly across the street from St. James Park, behind P.S. 24X located on the Grand Concourse–as gunfire was reported at 9:44 a.m. on May 20.

The school was immediately locked down for the rest of the day and all students were reported safe.

Police would soon determine that the victim had indeed been shot and bystanders were aware that the victim had died, even before the young man’s stepmother had arrived. She was pushing a baby stroller when she asked a news station cameraman, “Do you know what happened?”

After learning of the shooting, the woman replied, “I think my stepson is involved because his friend called and said he had been shot.” The woman was later taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she got the grim news.

One Creston Avenue resident recalled, “I tell all my kids that a ricocheting bullet has no name on it. It’s like the O.K. Corral out here,” as he recalled another shooting a week earlier on Jerome Avenue.

“I tell all my sons,” the resident continued, “If they approach you, give everything up. It’s not worth your life.”

Detectives currently have no motive or suspects in the shooting, but continue to investigate.
