The powerful healthcare workers’ union, 1199SEIU, has endorsed George Alvarez in his candidacy for the 78th Assembly District in the upcoming general election. The union represents some 450,000 members across the east coast, including 300,000 members in New York.
“George is the real deal,” said Dell Smitherman, 1199SEIU downstate political director. “We can say, unequivocally, that he brings the leadership we need right now in The Bronx.” Smitherman added, “George has been a fighter for Bronx families, advocating for public safety, better education, affordable housing, and for good pay jobs. We, today, face uncertain times in New York, and we need leaders like George to fight for us in Albany.”
As reported, Alvarez won the Democratic Primary with 1,923 votes to incumbent Assemblyman José Rivera’s 1,147 votes and Bronx Community Board 7 chairman, Emmanuel Martinez’s 988 votes. Alvarez said he was “honored and thrilled” to receive the endorsement of 1199SEIU. “I’ve always fought for better-paying, good union jobs in our community, and it is my commitment to deliver expanded labor protections and better working conditions for Bronx families,” he said.
“My campaign is about the issues that matter to the people of the 78th Assembly District. I’m working for our quality of life by improving our public education system, making our streets safer, and increasing access to accessible housing. I look forward to working in partnership with 1199SEIU to deliver for The Bronx.”
